With the big ride only a few days away, Emma Foy – RentGuarantor’s Chief Operations Officer – shares her last training blog before taking on the challenging 247-mile charity cycle from London to Paris…
“I spent some time with my childhood best friend in beautiful Northumberland last week and did two hefty rides over two days – one was definitely more enjoyable than the other!
The first was a bit of a warm-up, a 20-miler cycling alongside my old pal and catching up, and enjoying exceptional coffee and lemon drizzle cake partway through with a view of the stunning coastline. Bliss! The main event was the Great North Bike Ride. Equally lovely scenery from Seahouses to Tynemouth and a beautiful day, with real goldilocks weather for cyclists. Not too hot, not too cold, not too windy and not too rainy. But, no cake on this one (major points lost), and also made less fun by a friend who, when put in charge of logistics, decided that instead of driving to the start line, we should cycle to it – adding more than 23 miles to a ride that was already 60 miles from start to end.
The trip was also a trial of my bike-building skills. I’ll be flying my trusty bike to London before the big ride, and flying it home again from Paris, so it was a good test run boxing it up in pieces, taking it through the airport and putting it back together on arrival. There was some concern that I’d set off on a ride and a wheel would fall off, but luckily when we set off from London we’ll have a super support team with a mobile bike shop in the back of a van. We’re encouraged to be as self sufficient as possible, but it’s reassuring to know that the experts can get you moving again if you have any serious problems.
Having said that, the biggest concern with international travel is that the bike won’t arrive at all. Fingers crossed!
Until then, I’ll be recovering from a mild cold and dosing up on Vitamin C, to make sure I’m fighting fit before Friday.
