RentGuarantor’s Chief Operations Officer Emma Foy is cycling an impressive 247 miles from London to Paris on 11th September to raise money for our dedicated charity Furnishing Futures. Emma provides an update on how training is going as the big event looms and the heatwaves continue…
“I’ve changed tact with my training regime this month to make sure I’m ready to expect the unexpected. The benefit of a well-planned, well-known route means I can be certain I’m hitting my distance targets (nothing worse than finishing up and realising that you are 6 miles short, and having to circle the neighbouring streets 37 times to reach your goal), but the journey to Paris will be terrain I haven’t covered before. I’m proactively mixing up my routes to be ready for anything.
I’m also getting some practice in uphill. The first leg of the journey to Paris is by far the steepest, with elevations of up to around 1,000 feet through the South Downs. Its not quite all downhill from there but it does improve when we reach France, with elevations of up to around 700 feet. We should enjoy some gorgeous scenery; Day 2 involves a good stretch of dedicated, tarmac cycle paths out to the rural landscapes north of the country, and on Day 3 we’ll cycle through the Vixen Francais National Park and along the banks of the Seine.
While we haven’t had anyone fall into a canal in the last few weeks (see my last update for details on that escapade), we were knocked off our saddles - figurately speaking - by an enormous, mildly threatening, pig hanging around by the roadside. What was most unnerving is that we’d cycled past the same spot not 20 minutes before and he was nowhere to be seen. Maybe the heat was getting to us and we imagined him? It was 97% humidity during a Gibraltar cycle in early August…a trip to Ireland, bike in tow, provided some welcome relief.
